Technical Information

Ref: Oakleaf mock-tudor exterior planking
Description: mouldings of adzed and riven oak originals
Material: OCR

Introduction
Whilst originally designed for interior decoration, our products have become an increasingly popular choice for external use, being impervious to moisture and rot-proof. However, all finishes tend to fade from the effects of sunlight, especially stain finishes, and ours are no exception, and whilst many customers find this ‘weathered’ look attractive, it is likely that the finish will need refreshment at some stage. This is more for appearances than protection, as OCR will neither rot, nor absorb or emit moisture (often the cause of peeling or cracking paintwork on real wood). As a result, maintenance should be an infrequent requirement, especially with paint finishes, and replacement due to rot, unnecessary.

Material:
- OCR (Oakleaf Cellular Resin), a specially formulated resin-based moulding material. The closed cell structure of the material is inert once moulded, so neither absorbs nor emits moisture. Can withstand temperatures of up to 100 degrees centigrade, beyond which surface blistering might occur

Dimensions:
- supplied in approx 75, 100, 130, 150, 170, 200 or bespoke widths up to *345mm, x 15/40mm thickness,  x 3m lengths (* x up to 5.85m), with moulded/presentation face and edges, and flat, non-presentation backs

Standard Finish:
- jacobean oak, achieved through the hand-application of wood stains to a painted surface, to which a top coat of lacquer is applied, creating an antiqued effect. All solvents used in the finishing process have fully evaporated prior to packing and despatch. Non standard finishes, including black paint, together with a matching service, are also available for a small additional charge, or orders can be supplied in a primed state, ready for painting

Density:
- density approximately 120kgs/m3.

Weather:
- being closed cell, the moulding material is virtually unaffected by weather. However, it is important to protect the cellular core from sunlight, so cut ends should be sealed with filler or paint, or concealed by butt joint

Installation:
- sharp, small-toothed woodworking tools are recommended for use during installation, in conjunction with a pair of wall plugs and screws every metre or so, the latter counter-sunk just beneath the surface and concealed using our mock oak pegs. A solvent-cure filler adhesive is recommended in addition, to minimise any small movements. Unless securely fixed, the product will be free to bend and twist, much like real wood. As with wood, dust masks and eye protection are recommended when cutting

Expansion/contraction/movement
- a small amount of expansion/contraction should be expected from the effects of heat, but none from the effects of moisture

Fitting Tips

!

FITTING TIPS (see also TECHNICAL INFORMATION)

Ref: Oakleaf exterior rot-proof mock-tudor planking
Description: hand-stained mouldings of oak
Material: OCR

- when cutting to length (use sharp, woodworking tools) cut away from the finished surface

- roughen the unfinished backs well, to remove any mould release and to ensure adhesive keys to surface

- exposed cut ends should be protected from sunlight (water is not a problem) so those cut ends that are not hidden should be filled and/or painted. As the foam core is pale, it is advisable to darken the edges of cut ends prior to fixing

- plugs/screws are recommended to achieve a strong fix, positioned every metre or so, with adhesive*  along the length also, the former to minimise any large movement, the latter any small movement

- * we recommend a polyurethane wood glue, which expands slightly upon application, is very strong, and actually likes moisture during curing

- countersink the screw head just below the surface, then conceal with a mock oak plug (ref T24) – avoid countersinking too deep as this will reduce the strength of the material beneath the screw
