Polycarbonate Sheets

Polycarbonate Sheets beyond the Jargon

Information
Ok, we have deleted the technical stuff not sure if anyone was reading it anyway. Polycarbonate is a great material and its great at lots of jobs for lots of reasons.

Types Of Sheet
Firstly there are two main types of sheet solid glass like sheets and hollow sheets.

Solid Polycarbonate Sheet.
The solid sheets are used for just about everything you can think of from machine guards to police riot shields this is because it has fantastic impact resistance, I remember Hans from Holland smashing a piece with a hammer during my introduction to the material explaining its 200 times stronger than glass. He was right but what does this mean to you? Well let's start with cutting polycarbonate can be cut with an ordinary hand saw a jigsaw or a rip saw with a fine blade and lots of care. Solid sheets will not crack during cutting which is a big help. What are solid polycarbonate sheets be used for? These sheets make a great glass clear roof material safe due to the impact resistance they reduce light by little or nothing and you can see straight through them. In the event a roof tile should hit the sheet it's just going to bounce. Security these sheets cover everything from Church windows bank windows to the counter at your local chicken take away on a Friday night that's because bricks can break these sheets. What thickness do I use? Really the required thickness is down to how straight you want it to be and how big the area is to cover. 6mm sheets are fairly firm up to about 1200mm wide as a guide.
Are there glazing bars that I can use with solid polycarbonate sheets? Yes, but the system is designed to be used on top of timber supporting joists. Glass Roof Bars

Hollow Sheets
Sizes the original sheets come in lengths 6m x 2.1m wide these sheets are then cut to your required size. We can also arrange special deliveries on our own transport of sheets up to 7m long. Also by special arrangement sheets can be delivered up to 10 m  long but there are charges to pay for the delivery.
Thickness 4 mm thick is normally used to glaze greenhouse or cloches ar replace broken glass in an existing greenhouse. 6mm and 8mm sheets are used for partitions in stores or to create windbreaks or help with draft exclusion as required. 10mm sheets are the thinnest roofing sheets these sheets are perfect for roofing areas where the sides of the construction are open to the elements 10mm has the lowest u-value (u-value = heat retention) 16mm sheets are better with heat loss but should not be used on rooms that might get long term use during the day. 16mm is ok on a laundry room roof or other enclosed structure where no heating is ever used.
25mm  and 35 mm sheets are for living areas we manufacture self-supporting roofs for these sheets.

Colour
Polycarbonate sheets come in many colours but the main ones are clear which lets in maximum light then Opal which is the opposite of clear in that it loses a lot of light but it still has two advantages one is it reduces heat build up from the sun then the second advantage is the sheet hides dirt droppings etc so requires less cleaning the next colour is bronze which is a brown tinted sheet so it goes well with timber structures like pergolas or on lean-to roofs above a patio. There is also less used colour like blue or heat guard which is silver there are also mixed sheets that have two colours like a bronze opal combination so you can have one colour outside and another colour inside.

Glazing Bars
There are three main types cheap and cheerful timber supported snap down bars that have aluminium bottoms and plastic tops these are excellent value for money and if fitted correctly will last for years Then there is a similar bar but with a gasket which goes on to the timber bar and an aluminium top cap these have the advantage that they are suitable with any thickness of polycarbonate sheet or glass. Then finally self-supporting bars that do not need any timber joists
